A special tribute to Cowdenbeath’s engineering history is set to be unveiled on Saturday 28th June in a town centre ceremony.

A memorial cairn is to be unveiled celebrating the achievements and contribution of the workers of Cowdenbeath Central Workshop, which built and maintained vital mining equipment for pits across Scotland and the north of England from the Church Street site.

The event will coincide with the anniversary of a special royal visit to the Workshops by HM King George VI, Queen Elizabeth and Princess Margaret 77 years ago to the day.

The project is a joint venture from Cowdenbeath Community Council and My Cowdenbeath CIC, with funding from 4 Winds, Fife Council and the community council.  Local historian, Iain Chalmers, had led the work to commemorate all the men and women at the Workshops at a time when most of the buildings on the site have been demolished ready for redevelopment.

The unveiling of the commemorative cairn is open to everyone and locals are invited to meet at the Green Square opposite Partners at 1pm on Saturday 28th June before the short walk to Seco Place for the unveiling. The route is suitable for wheelchairs but some may find it easier to meet at the lower gates of the site on Seco Place.
